WCX Hosts US Treasury Secretary Lew at Seattle Roundtable

On Wednesday November 12, WCX and K&L Gates hosted a roundtable discussion in Seattle with US Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew.  The event, “Raising Our Game - Roundtable on Financing Resilient Infrastructure” was moderated by WCX Executive Director Chris Taylor and engaged a small group of high level participants from around the region including major investors, senior government officials, and civic and labor leaders to discuss strategies for engaging new forms of financing for needed infrastructure projects.  Secretary Lew has been tasked by President Obama with co-chairing the federal inter-agency Build America Investment Initiative Working Group which is due to deliver recommendations for federal actions to drive greater private investment in public infrastructure to the President in the next few weeks.  Themes of the meeting included:
  •          Potential benefits of engaging private capital in financing public infrastructure projects, through risk transfer and innovation
  •          Investor interest in infrastructure investment and current obstacles they face
  •          Discussion of successful models in other countries (e.g. Canada) that have helped address these issues
  •          Examples of regional infrastructure priorities and how governments are addressing them
  •          The need for standards and consistent approaches to private investment in public infrastructure
  •          Suggestions for how the Federal government can facilitate greater capital flows into infrastructure
WCX and its member states look forward to a continuing partnership with US Treasury as the Obama Administration pushes forward with its Build America Initiative.
